Here, in this little corner of the American South, where European traditions blend with Caribbean influences, the history is as colorful as the architecture; the food is the stuff of legend. New Orleans is a city that has never denied the importance of enjoying life or the necessity of the freedom to let yourself be who you truly are. We celebrate almost anything and have a saying: LAISSEZ LE BONS TEMPS ROULER -- LET THEGOOD TIMES ROLL. Throughout the year, locals love to dress in costume, throw ball, or put on parades no matter how flimsy the excuse. So, it’s no wonder that New Orleans has long been a haven for homosexuals in the South, and New Orleans’ Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender (LGBT) community is visible and thriving. Southern Decadence, which started out as an intimate going-away party for a friend in the early 1970s, now draws hundreds of thousands of LGBT revelers each Labor Day Weekend.
The sub-tropical weather, wonderful traditions and charming culture conspire to create an ambience that wouldn’t let you hold yourself back if you tried. Even straight people don’t hesitate to paint their houses pink. In addition to some of the finest convention facilities, there are over 1,000 restaurants to choose from, all a short walk away from your newly renovated hotel room. But while the fantastic nightlife and unique surroundings might garner the most attention, the LGBT culture in New Orleans truly is as rich and distinctive as you’d find in any city in the world.
